Rangers bounce right back for big winUpdated Saturday May 9, 2015 by Justin Markley.
The Durango Rangers bounced right back on Friday evening at ALP as they took on the Durango Dodgers. The cloudy skies and drizzle were familiar after the loss on Wednesday, but perhaps the conditions served as a reminder to the Rangers to start playing hard from the first pitch. And that is exactly what they did!
Derek Carman got the action started with a disciplined plate appearance getting a walk. Thomas Barnes then hit the first pitch he saw to the outfield fence legging out a triple and going all the way home on an error. Dixon Shropshire then did the exact same. Noah Pritchard followed with a double and later advanced to third. Lukas “Smoke” Minerich hit a sacrifice fly to drive Noah in. Jacob “Jake the Snake” Fenberg took a pitch to the helmet but was unfazed as he made it all the way around to third on Augie Prugh’s single. Cole House walked to load them up, but the inning ended with three stranded and 4 runs across.
In the second, Thomas reached on an error and got all the way around again on errors and wild pitches. Dixon hit a double but was left there as the inning ended.
Smoke started off the third by hitting the ball out of the atmosphere. However he hit it at such a high angle, it caught part of the centerfield fence on its way down. Smoke legged out a triple. Jake the Snake recorded an RBI as he hit the ball to the opposite field as Smoke trotted in. Augie followed with a double and advanced to home with a wild pitch and a passed ball. Cole House walked, stole second, and advanced the rest of the way on a passed ball and an error.
Land Lambert started the fourth with a line drive single and later scored. Derek followed with a single and stole a couple of bases before scoring. Thomas punched a double and later scored. Dixon recorded a single and later scored. Smoke hit a two bagger and later scored. Jake walked and scored. Augie hit a single and was advanced to second by Sophia Holt. Cole got on board being hit by a pitch but the inning ended with two left on.
The offense was on fire racking up 14 runs, but the defense was equally impressive. Dixon started on the mound and pitched two great innings. Dixon got into a little trouble in the first giving up one hit, walking one, and hitting a batter to load them up. However, he got great play from Noah behind the plate and Smoke at third to get the lead runner and close out a scoreless inning. The second was a 1, 2, 3 inning. Cole relieved pitching the third and fourth innings. The first batter Cole faced reached on an error, but was later tagged out at second as Derek from centerfield turned a double play with Augie at second. Cole struck out the third batter. To start the bottom of the fourth, Cole gave up a hard fly ball to centerfield. But Smoke sprinted to the ball, laid completely out, and came up with one of the most amazing catches in Durango Rangers history! Coach Justin had to look twice to make sure it was Cole on the mound and Smoke in centerfield! Cole struck out the next batter and the third hit into a 4-3.
The Rangers were quite impressive all the way around in the 14-0 win. Next up is the Bayfield Black team in Bayfield on Wednesday the 13th. Go Rangers!
